Today, on Día de la Hispanidad, we come together on a global level to celebrate the rich heritage, vibrant cultures, and profound unity of Hispanic nations. This momentous occasion goes beyond geographical boundaries, transcending borders to honor the shared history and the tapestry of traditions that connect millions of people around the world. Every year we celebrate October 12th, the day that Columbus marked history on a global level.
Significance of Día de la Hispanidad
October 12th, Día de la Hispanidad, is a national holiday in Spain. It was first celebrated in 1935. The significance of this day lies in its commemoration of Christopher Columbus’s arrival in the Americas in 1492. This day marks the moment when the Spanish language began to expand over the world. This day too, marks the moment in history where two worlds were united by means of a cultural bridge.
Columbus embarked his journey to the New Indies on August 3rd of 1492. He guided his three ships, la Pinta, La Niña and Santa Maria to the New Indies, or so he thought. When they approached land in the middle of October, they discovered that a whole new continent was blocking their passage to the New Indies, thus discovering promising new land. Colombus spotted islands, today known as the Bahamas. Over the years, rather than celebrating the expansion of the hispanic culture, we celebrate the diversity and resilience of Hispanic communities, cultures and festivities worldwide.

One of the key elements that make Hispanic culture so extraordinary is its grand diversity. Each nation contributes its unique flavours, colors. The result is a beautiful fusion of indigenous, European, and African influences across history. This diversity is a testament to the resilience and adaptability of Hispanic communities, as they have embraced and celebrated their differences, forming a collective identity that transcends borders.
From the lively salsa beats of Cuba and the soul-stirring tango of Argentina, to the passionate Flamenco of Spain, Hispanic nations have gifted the world with an incredible array of music and dance. These artistic expressions not only entertain but also serve as a powerful means of preserving and passing down cultural stories and values. The diversity extends through to gastronomy too! Where every dish tells a story of tradition and innovation. Whether savoring the exquisite flavors of paella in Spain or indulging in the spicy delicacies of Mexico, the culinary landscape of Hispanic nations is a feast for the senses.

How is the national holiday celebrated?
In Spain there is an official ceremony in Madrid, the capital. During the event, the Spanish flag is raised and a military parade is organised in the Paseo de la Castellana. The King, the royal family and representatives of the powers of the state are invited.
