Yellow Day is celebrated on June 20th. It is the complete opposite of Blue Monday, meaning that yellow day is considered the Happiest Day of the Year! The vibrant colour yellow is often associated with the sun; its warmth and energy. The colour evokes optimism in people, as well as a sensation of happiness. Conclusion: what better place than to celebrate Yellow Day than in Andalucía?

The symbolism of yellow in Andalucía

Before getting ahead of ourselves, where does the typical yellow colour come from in Andalucía? If we look at the Moorish architecture we can see that the colour yellow is not uncommon. Of course, with the significant influence that the Moors had in Andalucía, it does not come as a surprise that the colour yellow has trickled through our DNA and is still seen in our own architecture. Especially if we look at the great haciendas from Sevilla, you will recognise the classic yellow tones in their façades. Why yellow, one would wonder.

You would be surprised to hear that this emblematic and defining colour of the city only became popular, roughly 90 years ago. In 1929 the Exposición Iberomaericana took place. It was a world fair, organised in Sevilla with the purpose of improving relations between the state of Spain and the Ibero/Latin/Spanish-speaking countries that attended the fair. In order to welcome so many countries to Sevilla, the city was coloured in tones of yellow and red to make her more lively and beautiful. Many beautifully architected buildings were built in what is now called a “Sevillian” style, with the purpose of impressing the invitees.

Sunshine & Nature

The colour yellow is very common in Andalucía. One of the most beautiful sights in Andalucía are probably the yellow fields, filled with bright sunflowers!

Have you ever stood still to think about how many songs have the words sun or sunshine in them? A quick Google Search will give you impressive results! Humans need and crave sunshine. We even describe people we love or admire as sunshine because of its qualities. Given that sunshine is one of those bare necessities, just imagine what it is like to live in Andalucía, where you have sunshine all year round? They are the lucky ones!
