We are so proud and feel so lucky to live in a country where the sun shines more than 300 days a year. Our beautiful Andalucía is something else, it represents rare beauty. But let’s be honest, after a hot poniente summer we are thrilled about the first rain falls! Now that have had a few wet days, we can see the countryside is clean again. The green leaves are brighter, the green grass is beginning to grow and our Autumn chapter may begin!
The first rain fall
Rain fall? Some don’t believe us anymore. After having seen countless pictures and videos of sunny, warm weather in the middle of October, it is hard to believe that the seasons still change here in Andalucía. It’s funny, but of course we get our Mediterranean 4 seasons. Summer in Andalucía, and specifically the Costa del Sol, lasts until end of September. Then the weather starts to change. Mornings and evenings get a little bit cooler, the clouds start to appear and refresh the summer look of our countryside.
The first rain feels like glory! It’s refreshing for the countryside as well as for our summer brains, a rest is quite welcome. We too miss sitting on the sofa with a blanket, the crackling fireplace and a hot cuppa while watching a great movie or series. What’s absolutely great about the rain in Andalucía, is that we still get the Mediterranean temperatures, and the rain doesn’t last all day! Rare beauty, what did I tell you?
It might rain for a couple of hours, or especially during the night, so during the day we still get to enjoy the sun rays during lunch! But let’s get real. What is actually great about the rainy days in Andalucía? Keep reading:
Activities for the odd rainy day
As a real countryside lover, or a true campero, there are a few things that will put a smile on your face.
1. Chestnut roasting.
This is just a classic! The smell of roasted chestnuts fill family’s homes and even the streets in our local towns and cities. Starting in October the harvest of chestnuts begin. You can’t escape this Andalusian delight. Buying roasted chestnuts in the streets is a great idea. But an even better idea is disappearing into nature on a crisp morning and go chestnut hunting. When you get back home, you can prepare a fantastic stew with chestnuts that will keep you happy for the rest of the week!
2. Visit your local farms.
On a rainy day, visiting your local organic farm for fresh produce is one of the wonders of the Andalusian life. Whether you stock up on your local goats cheese and salchichón, or visit the local bakery. Whether you go to the local farmer to get your fresh veggies and fruit… It’s all a great way to keep yourself busy and stay healthy.
3. Engage in a workshop.
You name it and the Costa del Sol will have the right workshop for you! On a gloomier day what better activity than to stay cosy, indoors, and getting busy with your hands? Just from personal experience, we have done all sorts of workshops: pottery, ceramic painting, art & sculpting, cooking, singing, dancing… And there are probably so many others!
4. Other.
Engaging in a workshop that regards the countryside is one option. But other great alternatives are: going to an art exhibition at a museum, going shopping… And one of the very simplest and best ideas is to just curl up on the couch with a good book and a warm cup of tea. Spending quality time with friends and family in your gorgeous country property in Andalucía is one of those rare beauty moments.
