Living in the middle of nature

After living in London, Amsterdam and Los Angeles and travelling over the world, Ian and Melissa found this oasis of peace and quiet and couldn’t resist. They fell in love and bought this finca in Casares, Andalusia, to live in the middle of nature, surrounded by friendly farmers. They chose for a simpler lifestyle under the sun!

According to the owners, this finca has everything! Views to Gibraltar and Africa or over the mountains, friendly neighbours who’ve welcomed them into Andalusia, the tranquility of the countryside yet the coastal facilities at a 10 minute drive. They love to live with the goats, the donkeys and the chicken, but they also love to have lunch on the beach every now and then and enjoy the fried fish in chiringuito La Sal. They have fresh eggs every day and their vegetable garden provides onions, garlic, lettuce, peppers and tomatoes. Yet they can find some more exotic veggies in the coastal supermarkets if they like. The nearly 15.000 m2 plot has a fantastic pool area, it’s own mountain with seaviews and even has it’s own vineyard. The vines are still there but as the owner says, they need a little TLC. Sure it will be a little bit of work but wouldn’t it be fabulous though to have your own wine label?

The finca counts with 4 lovely cottages, a beautiful garden with pool and a seperate playroom. Ian and Melissa live in one of the cottages. The other three are rented out for holidays, to share the magnificent feeling of living in nature with the rest of the world. Breakfast with fresh eggs and orange juice is served on the private terraces each cottage counts with.

Restauring and refurbishing the cottages, the owners have respected the original details. They’ve kept the original roofs and walls. Inside they’ve combined the Andalusian style with modern paintings from Uwe Grumann, posters from los Angeles and antiques brought back from the UK, resulting in a true reflection of the melting pot of cultures in Andalusia.

Melissa says she most loves her semi professional kitchen next to the cosy dining room. They’ve spend many long evenings here wining and dining with friends or guests. She also loves to spend her mornings here, having breakfast and reading the papers. It feels like the house embraces you, welcomes you in, it has such a warm atmosphere, winter and summer time. She has to admit that summer mornings on the terrace are just as tempting. And the weather has been so nice in December and January, with almost 25ºC that even in these winter months breakfast was served on the terraces!

This stunning finca in Casares was featured in the Spanish  magazine ‘Vivir en el Campo’ nº 98, 2011
