At just 30 minutes from the beautiful town of Antequera, at the foot of El Torcal, lies a growing village with splendid views, Villanueva de la Concepcion. With its gastronomy and landscape, Mediterranean climate and its proximity to the historical main cities in Andalusia, it is the ideal location for luxury country properties!
Villanueva de la Concepcion’s history
In the old days, it was the natural passage between Antequera and the Málaga mountains. Iberians, Romans, Muslims and Christians occupied these lands. The Iberians founded the first village known to the area, the city of Osqva, which later would become one of the Roman villas of Málaga province, cited by the historians Tito Livio and Plinio in their works. According to the historian Juan Temboury, Osqva had its own necropolis. Over the centuries, Villanueva gained and lost its population, but it regained a certain prominence in the second half of the 18th century, coinciding with the “Camino Real” construction, the road joining Málaga to Madrid.
What to do, where to eat, where to go…
The main attraction for this area is the El Torcal Natural Park renowned for its unique limestone formations, it is one of the most geologically stunning of all of Andalucia’s natural parks!
Villanueva de la Concepcion holds one of the National Tourist Interest festivals, the Verdiales festival. It is one of the oldest festivals in the province, in which three existing modalities compete: Comares, Almogía, and Los Montes. They are groups that sing and dance around the town, whilst tasting typical food from the municipality.
For the romantics, apart from seeing the “Lovers Rock“, also known as the “Peña de Los Enamorados” or “Montaña del Indio” , there is a route around the town with love phrases, encouraging couples to walk through this lovely town and stop to enjoy the typical, white-washed streets, cobbled plazas and antique fountains.
For a real, Andalusian breakfast, Bar El Oasis is the place to go! The authentic breakfast of toast with olive oil and fresh tomato is delicious here, and they also offer main meals as well! The owner’s motto? “If you don’t like it, I’ll change it; if you want more, I’ll give you more!”, which isn’t a bad motto to go by!
Some other restaurants to try out around the area are Restaurante Rincón de la Villa and Restaurant Torcal Alto, with this last offering some stunning views of the El Torcal Natural Park.
