The historic cortijo
This beautiful cortijo has roots dating back to 1490! Can you imagine becoming the new owner of a property that has experienced 534 years of Andalusian beauty? How many people might have walked the corridors? How many great ideas might have been inspired from this very location? The mind can go wild thinking about how many experiences and wild adventures were born within these walls.
It’s incredible really, 534 years and still standing! What was the initial purpose of this property? Has it always looked like this? Who lived there? The questions are endless and the answers are not. But luckily for us, there is a relatively solid track record of this historic cortijo. The locals have passed on stories generation to generation. People have written about this property and that is how today, through our Andalusian Lifestyle blog, we can tell you the secrets of this beautiful property.
Where it all began
Well, it all began more than 500 years ago. If we think about the Andalusian history, Andalucía was in the middle of one of the most important wars that have taken place. Between 1482 and 1492 the battles of the famous Reconquista took place. The war in which the Catholics fought the Moors to take the Peninsula back. The final defeat in Granada, marked the end of an era of the Islamic rule in the Iberian Peninsula.
The people think that during this time, the historic cortijo was Moorish property, and when they were exiled, the property was transferred in ownership to a Noble Spanish family, or the Catholic Church. Today the boundaries add up to 132.782 m2, however, back then the property boundaries were over 10km in diameter! They say that the land stretched out from Casarabonela all the way to Alozaina.
The use of the land
When you drive through the mountains towards Casarabonela you see a beautiful change in landscape. Suddenly the mountains become softer: you know you are high up, yet you get the feeling that you are soaring above bumpy valleys. The colours are incredible! Especially now during summer you see a colour palette like no other. Tones of blue, green and golden mix together on the most perfect canvas. What you will see now is the land covered in matured olive groves. Do you think this is what it was like before?
No señor! During Roman times, Andalucía was an epicentre for the wine production. Because of the higher temperatures inland Andalucía, a beautiful sweeter red wine was produced on the fields of Casarabonela. What changed? The filoxera in 1870. The plague hit Spain hard and all vines were destroyed. Thankfully after years and years, we can proudly say that Andalucía is yet again one of the best places for wine production!
To recover from such an agricultural impact, the people had to react and adapt. Growing olives for oil and/or for table use was a great option too. Don’t you think it’s incredible how environmental factors can change so drastically in such little time?
Still curious?
I can go on and on and on and on! There is so much to tell about this stunning historic cortijo for sale in Málaga. But for now, I will leave you with a beautiful historical background. Stay tuned for more!
